Where it all began…. Coup de main…..Ham and Jam, and Lt. Col Pine-Coffin

Writer: jmsjabbjmsjabb

9th June. Back to a quieter Pegasus Bridge and a chance to photograph without the riff raff.... ( Did I say that!? )

Less radio, more scenery today, sorry chaps.

So, Lt. Col Richard Pine-Coffin, nickname Wooden Box played am important role in the 6th Airborne Division's airborne assault around the river Orne in the early hours of 6th June, 1944. His battalion was charged with reinforcing Major John Howard's 181 strong Coup de main force, which had captured the Caen canal and Orne river bridges. These bridges were to be held until relieved later on in the day following the Allied amphibious landings.

Pine-Coffin dropped in with his battalion at 00.50 and succeeded Major Howard to command the bridges.

He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order for his command of the Caen canal bridge's defence on June 6t
